1x to 2x can get away with fairly coarse adjustments. It depends on what magnification you're using how accurate you will need the rail slider to be. A basic macro slide rail is probably the cheapest. If you're shooting a static subject there are a lot more options. The downsides are that it's not super accurate if you're using a high magnification and most flashes won't recycle quickly enough with your camera FPS, and you need a fairly steady hand. People have used this technique for stacking macro images with some success. You can handhold the camera and instead of using the lens to change focus, use continuous shooting mode (hopefully with a decent FPS) and move the whole camera slightly to adjust where the focus is toward/away whatever the subject is. There's some other options depending on what you're shooting. It is an interesting gadget, I'm not sure how fast it can refocus for each shot though. It looks like I will have to lodge a claim through PayPal to resolve what appears to be fraudulent behaviour if someone in the supply chain is collecting 10% GST on behalf of the Australian Government on an order for goods which I believe should be exempt from GST.

The videos below show how to do this, first with Zerene Stacker then with Helicon Focus 7. These artefacts can be retouched using apicture from PMax or Helicon Focus method C. Not using PMax or Helicon Focus method C tends to give pictures with less noise and better colours but with a lot of stacking artefacts near edges. At this date – autumn 2019 – Zerene Stacker non pro version ships with basic retouching functions. Both Helicon Focus and Zerene Stacker have their own retouching abilities. If you do not want to handle the spots in Lightroom or you find that Lightroom automatic handling of hot pixels missed some of them. This is the result using first Helicon Focus then Zerene Stacker – the problem is solved. When I am done with the grey card photo, I copy the settings to all the photos in the stack.
